Alice McCall Is Bringing Disco Back

We are so lucky to have the totally bitchin’ 80s back, with shoulder-padded blazers, miniskirts, and jumpsuits being some of my favourite fashion pieces. Ostrich feathers and disco are back in a big way, with Saint Laurent, 16 Arlington, Chanel and Germanier all showcasing feathered party dresses for the next two seasons.

At least we know Alice McCall has her finger on the money, because colourful patterns, sparkly sequins, and ostrich feather cuffs were rife at Alice McCall’s Resort 2022 showing.

This past week has been Australia’s beloved fashion week, with your fave brands like Christopher Esber, Michael Lo Sordo, Maggie Marilyn and Zimmermann showing their latest collections, but a definite stand-out was Alice McCall’s retro foray back into disco.

Let me set the scene: A rust-red-walled warehouse with a Pucci-esque pink patterned floor, moody lighting and sparkling chandeliers framing centre stage… Men and women both paraded down the runway wearing jewel-toned satin Mary-Jane platforms or wild snake-skin thigh-high boots in bubblegum pink. Hair is big with curtain bangs, and make-up consists of blue eyeshadow and wine-stained lips.

As for the clothes (see my favourites below), they were loud, and very 80s – one of my favourite combos. Think psychedelic patterns, metallic leather patchwork, cropped collared jackets with matching miniskirts, and clear sequins that catch the light so when you walk into the room, you’ll catch the eye.

My favourite is the Swan Lake mini dress with the multicoloured 80’s print and the fluffy cuffs, but I’m always a sucker for a jumpsuit, so you could see me in the bright pink Alessandra Rich-esque number too – I wouldn’t rule it out.
